The 75,000 hectare Galloway Forrest Park is the first area in the U.K. to be awarded Dark Sky status. The extremely low levels of light pollution make ideal conditions for night gazers and star spotters.

Nestled on the edge of the Dark Sky Park the Accommodation at Galloway Activity Centre is the perfect base for anyone keen to enjoy the night sky at it's best. We've had a number of astronomical societies book into our bunkhouse during the winter months to set up their equipment and anyone staying in our eco bothies will be able to make use of the supplied telescope.

things to do red kites

A trip to Loch Ken wouldn't be complete without a Red Kite flying overhead and exploring the Red Kite trail is time well spent.

The Red Kites were successfully re-introduced to Loch Ken and they're regularly seen soarking over head. The Galloway Kite Trail runs anti-clockwise around the Loch with various points of interest along the way. One of the popular spots to visit it the Hidden Cages - the site of the original re-introduction site and you can travel there with bikes hired from the centre.

There At around 2pm every day the Kites get fed at Bellymack Farm, it's not to be missed and sometimes over 100 kites can be seen feeding.

Head down to reception on your arrival and let us help you plan the best way to encorporate the Red Kite trail into your stay.
